See also the
website of The Hot Potato Syncopators
The Horseshoe pub is tucked away down a lane off Clerkenwell Green, and can be tricky to find, so here are some directions:
nearest stations:
- Farringdon (400m) - zone 1,
- Chancery Lane (680m) - zone 1,
- Barbican (720m) - zone 1
- City Thameslink (870m), Angel (940m) - zone 1
How to find it:
Turn Left out of Farringdon tube and left again up Turnmill Street. Cross Clerkenwell Road at the top, then right and left into Clerkenwell Green. Walk across the green (which for the uninitiated is not green at all) and walk down the road at the side of the Crown Tavern, you should see the pub in front of you.

With new cover design, but otherwise completely unmodified content there will be "Hearts of Oak" and "Pluck" soon.

Information from the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain
It has been brought to the attention of The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, that another organisation, claiming to have been playing in the UK and Europe since 1998 and to being "the cult sensation from London" is being promoted in Germany and Austria.
This show is using publicity text and photos similar to that used by the UOGB, and has indeed been promoted online using an actual photo of the UOGB. A publicity quote for this other organisation is said to come from "The London News". We do not know this newspaper.
In addition, the other organisation has announced that Peter Moss has "taken over the musical direction of the orchestra". Please note that Peter Moss has no prior or current involvement with the UOGB.
The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain would like to make it clear that it has nothing to do with this other organisation.
At the very least this is all confusing, and it is known that some ticket buyers, ukulele fans, and venue managers in Germany have already been given the impression that they were dealing with the UOGB.
The UOGB however continues to tour all over the world, with many dates in Germany and Austria in 2010 and 2011; and will be performing in the Theaterhaus in Stuttgart on October 2nd and 3rd 2010.
The other organisation has announced that it too will be appearing in Stuttgart at the Liederhalle on 19 March 2011.
We understand that approaches have been made to ukulele players in the UK and Germany as well as to a number of German and Austrian theatres. Some of those contacted have, we understand, been left with the impression that they were dealing with the UOGB and have felt very uncomfortable when the situation became clear.
The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, (which has been in existence for 25
years),
www.ukuleleorchestra.com
would like to distance itself from the other organisation:
The United Kingdom Ukulele Orchestra, (whose website appeared on Wednesday
5th May 2010),
www.ukulele-orchestra.co.uk
The agency which is promoting this other orchestra and which has registered
this other website is
www.yellowconcerts.de
This organisation has no connection with the UOGB.
The UOGB has no problem with someone putting on a ukulele (or any other) concert, of course, but if the public or professionals are left with the impression that they are dealing with the UOGB when this is not the case, then we are very concerned.

#75: Ukulelescope - 2nd March Berlin

For the coming German premiere of the new UOGB
show "Ukulelescope" at the Babylon cinema in Berlin
there are a few excerpts from the show on YouTube (recorded at two
performances on 6th June 2009 at the BFI Southbank, London)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60RqE8-Eel4
The Babylon opposite to the Volksbühne at the Rosa-Luxemburg-Place offers the appropriate surroundings for Ukulelescope with its long history as a cinema and the old building.
The Ukes set here a highly interesting collection of short films from the early days of the silent film to music, with original works of Hester Goodman and George Hinchliffe, the typical Ukes humour and a number of cover versions from the larger part of the twentieth century.

#72: German premiere of Ukulelescope in Berlin

On Tuesday,2nd Mar 2009 a German audience gets the first chance to see "Ukulelescope", the new show of theUOGB in the Babylon-Kino in Berlin.
Ukulelescope is all about a collection of short silent movies, that Hester Goodman has compiled from the archives of the British Film Institue and so the music of the show is complementary to the stories, that the short reels from the first days of the silent film tell.
But it weren't the Ukulele Orchestra, if they'd do "only"
background music for the movie. With a wonderful mixture of original
compositions of Hester Goodman and George Hinchliffe, very carefully
chosen cover versions from all imaginable genres and the humour, that
Ukulele Orchestra is so famous for, they contribute their very own
accent to the charming, amazing and strange footage.

#68: TheUkes in the tv series
"Skins"
There will be a cameo appearance of theUOGB in an episode of the fourth series of the tv programme "Skins", which will be broadcast from around January 2010 on E4. The programme is about a group of teenagers and their relationships. Shot in Bristol the series has already won several prices and it even was nominated for a BAFTA in 2008.
TheUkes (all but Jonty)
went to the shooting in Bristol on 6th Oktober and they'll appear as
members of "some ukulele-club" in one episode, which centres around the
character of the
autistic JJ.
Certainly their instruments also play a very important part and there
will be a song, that has never been heard from theUkes before (unless you have listened secretly backstage in Karlsruhe when
they rehearsed it last September...).

#67: Lobby Lud the "Mystery Man"
On the website of Paul Slade,
http://www.planetslade.com,
there are two versions of "Lobby Lud the Mystery Man"
offered for free download, which have
been recorded by George Hinchliffe
of theUOGB . There is
one vocal and one instrumental version.
About the background of the story and the recordings:
In 1927 the Westminster Gazette, a London newspaper, invented a novel scheme to stimulate their readership's interest. A photo and a vage description of a man were published, who was visiting selected British cities where the readers were meant to find and recognise him.
When somebody said the words "You are Lobby Lud. I claim the Westminster Gazette prize" to him and had a copy of the newspaper with him, he won a grand amount of price money. The role of this "mystery man", who travelled through the country for the newspaper using the fictitous name "Lobby Lud" was taken over by a reporter, who also reported regularly about the adventures with his pursuers in the Westminster Gazette.
Now the London journalist Paul Slade has recently attended to the story and has published a very extensive and highly entertaining report about it. While doing his research he also stumbled upon the sheet music for the "official Lobby Lud song", composed by Fred Sandford and Fred Malcolm, which also has been sold by the Gazette while this campaigne.
Since it said, the piece had been written for ukulele
accompaniment, he simply sent it to George some time ago, and asked him
to record it for him. The result is offered now with George's consent
on his
website for download, where you also can read the full story
about Lobby Lud.
